Car Care Tips
Did you recently buy your first car? Or are you about to buy it soon?
Then this article is for you because I will explain the 3 basic car care things you have to do yourself between maintenance, to keep your car in good shape. They are all easy to do and waiting until your periodic garage maintenance might be too long, which can damage your vehicle. I recommend checking all the following things
once every 2 to max 3 months. I do not recommend waiting for a warning signal, because then you are very late. And levels are already too low, which can damage you already, so you want to avoid that.
Car Tair Caring Tips
One of the essential things in car care tips to do is keep the tires inflated. The tires lose air slowly over time. When the air pressure is becoming too low, the tires can get damaged, you waste more gas, and you will have more inadequate control over the car. To check and inflate your tires, do the following: First, check the recommended air pressure of your tires. You can find this info in the car manual, and for most cars, it’s also on the inside of the driver’s door or the inside of the fuel door.
If you don’t have a manual check the internet for a manual of your car type. You don’t need to buy a pressure gauge because you can easily set the air pressure to the level you want at most gas stations. The machine will bring your tire to that level, and stop automatically when it’s reached. So go to a gas station. Most of the time it’s free, or just 50 cents. Just remove the valve caps, attach the air machine, and put the lids back on afterward.
Engine Care Tips
Coolant ensures your engine doesn’t get overheated, and also provides it doesn’t freeze in the winter. So it’s essential to keep it at the right level all year. You probably don’t have to add coolant every time you check it, but this differs from car to car. Sometimes the coolant of the car will last longer than other times. So it’s best to regularly check the levels and see if it needs a top-up. To check the coolant, make sure your car is on
level ground, and the engine is cold. So do the check before you drive, or wait a few hours after you’ve driven. Then open the hood of the car, and look for a transparent reservoir. The coolant has a very outstanding color like pink or yellow. In the repository, you can see at what level the coolant is, and where it should be at a minimum. If the level is almost at minimum, top it up till where it says maximum. For this, it’s useful to have a funnel. There are a lot of different coolants, check the manual for which type you need, as using the wrong one can damage the car. Double-check by making sure you add the same color as the color that’s already in the reservoir.
And the third most important thing to check regularly is the oil of the car. One of the things oil does is make the engine run smoothly. When oil levels are too low, the engine can’t function right, which can cause damage. To check oil levels, make sure the car is on a level surface, and the engine is cold. Open the hood, and look for the oil dipstick. Pull out this dipstick and wipe off the oil on it, with something like an old cloth. Put the dipstick all the way back in, and pull it out again, to see the actual level most accurate. Check where the oil on the stick ends, and check at what point it should be, by looking in your manual again. If the level is getting on the low side, top-up till the max indication.
Just search for a cap with an oil sign on it near the dipstick, and open it. Again it’s useful to use a funnel, and you have to check the manual on which type of oil you have to use, as there are different types, and using the wrong one can damage your car. Recheck the dipstick while topping up, to see at which level it is now. For all these 3 things, tires, coolant, and oil go the following: do not overfill them. Because just like too low levels, excessively high levels are harmful either, as they can also damage your car. So pay attention to car care of max values, and don’t go beyond that. So fill up slowly, not too fast, because you can quickly overfill.
These were the 3 most important car care things you have to check yourself once in a while between servicing, to avoid damage.
Other Important Cares
Inspect your battery
To keep your car battery in good condition, it’s important to check it at least once a year for white dry acid buildup on the terminals. If you notice any, remove the negative cable before the positive cable and use a wire brush and battery corrosion cleaner to clean the terminals. You can also use a mixture of baking soda and water for cleaning. Rinse the cleaned area with water, dry it with a cloth, and then reconnect the battery by attaching the positive cable first.
Tune Up you Car
Nowadays, cars don’t need as much engine work because they have electronic sensors and controls. Car dealers may say they’re doing a “full tune-up” but they’re probably just doing routine maintenance. You can save money by doing basic maintenance on your own, unless you think something is really wrong with your car.
Change your windshield wiper blades
Ensure to replace worn-out windshield wiper blades that skip or leave streaks on your windshield or make squeaking noises. Check the rubber strips on the blades for cracking and wipe them clean occasionally.
The recommended time to replace wiper blades is every 6-12 months, which can vary depending on weather and usage. Keep an extra pair in your trunk for convenience.
You can replace the blades yourself by following the instructions in your owner’s manual and on the packaging.
TOP UP YOUR COOLING SYSTEM LIQUID
Coolant, a mix of antifreeze and water, isn’t only for winter. Your car needs it throughout the year to maintain the right engine temperature. Look at your car manual to know when to check and add coolant.
- Regularly check your AC system: Regularly inspect your AC system to ensure it’s running correctly.
- Use it often: Even in the cooler months, turn on your AC for at least 10 minutes once a week to keep the system functioning properly.
- Replace the cabin air filter: A dirty cabin air filter can reduce the efficiency of your AC system. Replace it every 12,000 to 15,000 miles.
- Keep the condenser clean: The condenser can get clogged with dirt and debris, which can cause your AC to stop working. Clean it regularly to keep it functioning correctly.
- Don’t overload the system: Don’t overload your AC system by setting too low a temperature. This can cause the system to work harder than necessary, leading to problems over time.
Replace Cavin Air Filter
Here’s an easy way to feel cool and fresh when it’s hot outside: change the air filter in your car! You don’t need to pay someone else to do it, and you can buy the filter at any auto parts store. It won’t make your car run better, but it will make you feel better while driving.

You need to drive safely at night by having properly functioning headlights. Ensure both headlights work well so you can see the road and other cars can see you. The backlights are also important for other vehicles to keep a proper distance. The brake lights turn on when you brake your car, so other drivers know to keep a distance. Ask a friend to help you check your brake and rear lights while performing these functions.
Taking care of your brake fluid
Here are some tips on how to take care of your brake fluid:
- Check the brake fluid level: Check the level of your brake fluid regularly to ensure it’s at the proper level. The fluid reservoir is usually under the hood near the brake master cylinder.
- Replace the brake fluid: Over time, it can absorb moisture, reducing its effectiveness. Replace your brake fluid every two years or per your car’s manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Use the right brake fluid: Make sure you use the brake fluid recommended by your car’s manufacturer. Using the wrong type of fluid can damage your braking system.
- Avoid spilling brake fluid: Brake fluid is corrosive and can damage painted surfaces, so be careful when handling it. If you spill brake fluid, clean it up immediately.
- Have your brakes inspected regularly: Regular brake inspections can help identify any potential problems with your braking system, including issues with the brake fluid. Have your brakes inspected at least once a year.
Check Your Horn Time to Time
Here are the steps to check your car’s horn:
- Locate your car’s horn: The horn is usually in the engine bay or near the front grille.
- Check the wiring: Ensure the horn’s wiring is connected correctly and not damaged.
- Test the horn: Press the horn button on your car’s steering wheel. Your horn is working correctly if you hear a loud, clear sound. If there is no sound, check the fuse or relay for the horn. If the fuse or relay is okay, the horn may be faulty and require replacement.
- Test the pitch: If you hear a sound but it’s not loud or clear, it could indicate a malfunctioning horn. Check the pitch of the horn to see if it sounds normal. A high-pitched or low-pitched sound could be a sign of a problem.
- Check the volume: If the horn sound is weak, it could be due to a low voltage or a weak horn. Check the battery and charging system to ensure they are functioning properly. If the battery and charging system is okay, the horn may need to be replaced.
