Pro Lift Jack Stands

If you’re going to work on your car, odds are you need a pair of jack stands. Maybe your truck has enough ground clearance that you can reach the oil filter from underneath without them, but to be able to pull the wheels off and work on the brakes, jack stands are an absolute must. Thirty years ago, most jack stands were thin stamped metal and had a height-adjustable securing pin. That design changed to stands made with thicker, welded metal and using a toothed height adjustment mechanism. A highly-publicized recall of Harbor Freight stands with the toothed mechanism have made stands with locking pins popular again. We examine the best overall jack stands, the best jack stands for a budget, the best high-end set of jack stands, the best truck jack stands and the best jack stands to take on a road trip.

What to Consider in Jack Stand

Weight

The most important factor in any jack stand is its rated weight capacity, which should never be exceeded by the user. The stands are often rated as a set in a value of tons. For instance, a pair of jack stands may be marked with a 3-ton or 6,000-pound capacity. Each of these stands will be rated individually to hold 3,000 pounds per corner, which is plenty for most small and mid-size cars. When using jack stands, it’s better to have too much weight capacity than just enough. As a rule of thumb, each stand should be capable of holding about 75 percent of the total weight of the vehicle to ensure safety.

Height

Most jack stands will also have adjustable height, with a locking mechanism to keep the desired setting in place. Higher maximum settings may be needed when lifting taller trucks or SUVs.

Stability

A stand with a larger surface area at its feet will often be more stable under load. Plywood sheets can make a sturdy base when lifting vehicles on surfaces like dirt, but a hard concrete floor is always preferable. Parking brakes and wheel chocks should also be used to keep any wheels on the ground from rolling during the jacking process.

Best Practices

Always place jack stands beneath the manufacturer’s designated lift points, which are often marked along the underside of the vehicle. The owner’s manual may also assist in locating them. Place the car on flat, level ground, jacking up each corner to the desired height, and then gently lowering them onto the jack stands. Repeat until all four corners are off the ground and stable. To get the car down, do it all in reverse.

FAQ

Q: Are Jack Stand Safe?

Answer: If used correctly and not overloaded, they’re safe. Always use jack stands on a level concrete surface. The main dangers come from a) using them on asphalt and having them sink into it, particularly on a warm day, and b) pushing and shoving the car (for example, when installing a transmission) and setting up a resonance that can cause the vehicle to topple off the stands. The safest way to use jack stands is to raise the vehicle with a floor jack, set it on the stands, then leave the floor jack in place as a backup.

Q: Can you put a car on one jack stand?

Answer: Depending on the task, you may need to lift just one wheel, the back end or front end, or the entire vehicle. If you are lifting just one wheel or one end of your vehicle, you’ll need at least 2 jack stands. It’s not advisable to put your car on a single jack stand.

Q: How do I know what weight rating I need?

Answer: Look up your vehicle’s weight in the owner’s manual or online. Divide it by two to get the approximate weight over the front or rear wheels. In theory, that is the approximate minimum weight rating of the pair of stands you need. However, a) you never want to use the minimum needed weight rating, and b) you need jack stands that will reach the underside of your vehicle and have a base wide enough to give you the appropriate amount of stability. For example, if you own a 6,000-pound truck, half the weight is 3,000 pounds, and even a pair of 4,000-pound jack stands exceeds that, so on paper, they will support the front of the car, but the odds are the maximum height of a 4,000-pound pair of jack stands won’t even reach the truck’s higher frame rails. In short:

  • Buy 2-ton (4,000-pound) jack stands only if you have a small light vehicle.
  • Buy 3-ton (6,000-pound) jack stands for a medium to large vehicle or a medium SUV.
  • Buy 5- or 6-ton (10,000 or 12,000-pound) jack stands if you will be routinely working on a truck or large SUV.
